New Heat and Dry Foil Embossing Technique

I am having so much fun playing with a new technique I discovered on Melissa Kerman's blog here! In her blogpost, she has a link to the tutorial she posted on combining dry embossing (embossing folders) and heat embossing on aluminum foil for this awesome looking background. I have made half a dozen or so cards with different colors and embossing folders and have already sold an article on it to the editor of Scrap and Stamp Arts. This was my first and my favorite of the cards I made so far. I streaked black Stazon on a piece of cardstock wrapped in aluminum foil. The first few cards I made I used standard aluminum foil, but some of them ripped when I did the last sponging step, so I bought some heavy duty aluminum foil and that solved that problem. I applied Versamark ink to the flatter side of the trees embossing folder from Stampin' Up (generally the side with the words on it, but if you like the debossed look, you can try the other side.) I layed the aluminum wrapped piece down on the versamarked side of the embossing folder and ran it through my machine. Then I dumped gold and brown embossing powder randomly and heated that to melt it. The last step is to sponge on black ink (Stazon or Archival black) around the edges and wherever you might want to tone down the silver or highlight the embossing. I attached the completed piece to a gold card base and added Memory Box's trio of deer and Tonic Studio's Thinking of You.

I am entering this card in Scrapy Land's Anything Goes challenge.

  1. This is beautiful Karen. I have tried similar with embossing folders but not with the embossing powder but will give it a try. At the moment I'm working on a card using the vellum spotlight technique that you shared previously. Barbxx

  8. Beautifully done, Karen! Thank you for the link back to the tutorial!

Karen, did you swipe some of the Staz-on ink onto the foil covered cardstock before embossing, and then again as the final step of your method?

    It's wonderful.

thank you! (and congrats on the article!)

    hugs,
